say no to racism!

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on the 21st of March. The United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination in 1966.

This particular date was selected because of the tragic events in South Africa in 1960. Briefly, on the 21st of March 1960 in Sharpeville thousands of black protesters demonstrated against Apartheid. Police opened fire against them. 69 people were killed and 180 injured including women and children.

Today we remember the victims of racism and xenophobia, who were discriminated against based on color, religion or nationality.

How can we as Panathinaikos Supporters not stand firmly against all forms of racism and discrimination, when athletes like Djibril Cisse, Mike Batiste, Gilberto Silva, Dominique Wilkins, Emmanuel Olisadebe and more, have honored our Club?

How can we as Panathinaikos Supporters not stand firmly against all forms of racism and discrimination, when athletes like Pape Habib Sow, Ibrahim Sissoko, Stephane Lasme, Diana Delva and more are currently part of our Club?

How can we as Panathinaikos Supporters not stand firmly against all forms of racism and discrimination, when we watched in horror as Djibril Cisse and Gilberto Silva suffered through racist chants and behavior during the “derby of shame” in Karaiskakis’ stadium in 2010?

We at Pao Abroad denounce all forms of racism towards athletes and supporters and look forward to the day when these phenomena are extinct from our fields and stadiums.
“Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away, and that in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty.”

Martin Luther King Jr.
